Urgent action (good news): Environmental activist Farzad Haghshenas, released on bail

Farzad Haghshenas, an environmental activist and member of the NGO, Sabzchia (The Green Mountain Society), was released on bail on 1 October.

A member of the Kurdish minority in Iran, Farzad Haghshenas, 35, was released from the Marivan Intelligence detention facility in Kordestan Province, north-western Iran, after the payment of about 520 million rials bail (about US$ 50,000). Intimidation and threats have been used against villagers to coerce them into accepting inadequate compensation or resettlement, and the security forces have used unnecessary force against peaceful gatherings of protesters. Urgent action (good news): Tibetan scholar Tagyal released on bail

Tagyal, Tibetan scholar and writer, was released on bail on 14 October 2010. According to his lawyer, he has returned home.

Tagyal, who writes under the pen name Shogdung, was detained on 23 April 2010 following the publication of his book “The Line between Sky and Earth”. The book, which is banned in China, describes Tibet in the wake of the widespread unrest in 2008 as “a place of terror”. The school buildings were completed in time for the start of the new school year in September, and at the end of the month the army ordered a moratorium on demolitions in Area C. Soldiers in Area C have generally complied with the moratorium.


 

Update - 12/02/2008

The fate of the school is now being fought in court. The court hearing is expected in March (exact date to be confirmed nearer the time). The school remains at risk and sustained campaigning action is important. [ Lire la suite » ]
