In recent weeks, police have detained at least 21 garment factory employees and labour rights activists following violent street protests in and around the Bangladeshi capital, Dhaka. They are at risk of torture or other ill-treatment. Some workers and activists have gone into hiding. Journalist and human rights defender Shiva Nazar Ahari appears to have been charged with moharebeh (enmity with God), which can carry the death penalty. The Supreme Court began a review of Sakineh Mohammadi Ashtiani's death sentence on 4 August: this appears aimed solely at reducing international pressure on the authorities, by deferring a decision on the method of execution. The stoning sentence remains in place. [ Lire la suite » ]
