Urgent action: Sri Lankan activists threatened

On 2 March, a Sri Lankan news website, Lankanewsweb, published the names of human rights defenders and journalists featured on a list it alleged was compiled by a Sri Lankan intelligence unit. Amnesty International fears that the list was leaked to the press as part of a government campaign to intimidate those named on it, and stop them from speaking out against the authorities. Two male human rights defenders, Dr Paikiasothy Saravanamuttu and J. C. Weliamuna, are at particular risk. [ Lire la suite » ]

Lawyer Ernesto Rábago Martínez was shot and killed in his office in Chihuahua City, northern Mexico. He and his female partner, Estela Ángeles Mondragón, had previously been threatened and attacked because of their legal work for an Indigenous community involved in a land dispute. A mob with official backing is attempting to evict nearly 200 Buddhist monks and nuns from a monastery in central Viet Nam. The group have been sheltering there since they were evicted from another monastery in September, by a similar mob. [ Lire la suite » ]

Documentary filmmaker Elena Varela López was released on 13 August, after more than three months in custody. She is now subject to aresto domiciliario nocturna (house arrest between 10pm and 8am), and arraigo nacional (she cannot leave the country). [ Lire la suite » ]
