Urgent action (good news): Kuwaiti journalist Muhammad ‘Abd al-Qader al-Jasem freed

Amnesty International has learnt that Kuwaiti journalist Muhammad ‘Abd al-Qader al-Jasem was released on bail on 4 December 2009, 12 days after being detained. He had been held at the Interior Ministry’s Criminal Investigation Department in the Kuwaiti capital, Kuwait City, after criticizing the Kuwaiti Prime Minister, Sheikh Nasser Al Sabah, during a private meeting in October 2009. Noor-Ul-Islam Sherbaz, a 17-year old boy, has been held incommunicado since 27 July in Urumqi, capital of the Xinjiang Uighur Autonomous Region (XUAR) in western China. He is at risk of torture and other ill-treatment and his family fear for his life. [ Lire la suite » ]
Urgent action: Two women’s rights activists, Mehrnoush Etemadi and Hayedeh Tabesh, arrested

Two women, Mehrnoush Etemadi and Hayedeh Tabesh, both members of the Campaign for Equality (also known as the One Million Signatures Campaign) have been arrested in Esfahan, central Iran, in relation with their peaceful activities for the Campaign. Mehrnoush Etemadi is held in Dastgerd Prison, Esfahan, but Hayedeh Tabesh’s whereabouts are unknown.
Amnesty International believes both women to be prisoners of conscience, detained solely for the peaceful expression of their right to freedom of expression and association. [ Lire la suite » ]

Urgent action: Tunisian man, Lotfi Dassi, at risk of torture

Former political prisoner Lotfi Dassi was arrested by security forces in Tunisia on 23 November, apparently in relation to his activities to secure financial aid for families affected by floods in the town of Redeyef. Mahboubeh Karami was acquitted by Branch 15 of the revolutionary Court in Tehran on 11 November. The court found that there was insufficient evidence against her in relation to the charges of “acting against state security” and “disturbing public order”. [ Lire la suite » ]
Nahid Kalhor (f), aged 21, student

Student Nahid Kalhor was released on bail on 11 June from the Ministry of Intelligence detention centre in the south-western city of Qom. After being arrested on 1 June, Nahid Kalhor was held in solitary confinement for the first three days of her custody.
Nahid Kalhor was forced, during interrogation to reveal the passwords to her e-mail and weblog after which, she was questioned about her contacts within and outside of Iran. [ Lire la suite » ]
