In late December, reports appeared in the Iranian press apparently reiterating that Sakineh Mohammadi Ashtiani, a woman facing execution in Iran, could be executed by hanging instead of stoning. The appeal hearing of 20 Bahraini health professionals previously sentenced by a military court opened before the High Criminal Court of Appeal, a civilian court, on 23 October. A former neighbour and a key witness in the trial of Basilia Ucán, an indigenous woman in Mexico, have been put under pressure by representatives of the State Prosecutor’s to make statements against her. Navid Khanjani, a member of two Iranian human rights organizations, was sentenced to 12 years’ imprisonment on 31 January 2011. He has appealed, but an appeal hearing date has not yet been set.
