Urgent action (good news): Zimbabwe. Detained activists released on bail.

Three Zimbabwean activists from the Media Monitoring Project Zimbabwe (MMPZ) who were arrested in December 2011 have been released on bail. Two charges against them have now been dismissed by a Magistrate. They continue to face a third charge of “undermining the authority of or insulting President Robert Mugabe”. Amnesty International believes that the activists were arrested solely as a result of their legitimate work advocating for media reforms and freedom of expression in Zimbabwe. Thirty-nine of the 45 activists arrested in Harare on 19 February were freed after the treason charges against them were dismissed by a magistrate court. However, six activists remain in custody facing treason charges. Meanwhile, 24 activists arrested in Mutare, including a parliamentarian, had a hearing of the state’s appeal on bail postponed. Urgent action (good news): Zimbabwean human rights defender Farai Maguwu bailed

On 12 July, Zimbabwean human rights defender Farai Maguwu was granted bail following more than one month in detention for carrying out his human rights work. He still faces a charge of “publishing or communicating false information prejudicial to the state” after he exposed human rights violations in Zimbabwe’s Marange diamond fields.
