Urgent action: USA: urge Illinois governor to sign abolition bill

The Illinois legislature has passed a bill to abolish the death penalty in the state. This historic bill now goes to the state governor who can sign it into law or veto it. Governor Pat Quinn has said he will look at the bill “very carefully”. He has a maximum of 60 days to act on it. The community of Restinga is in imminent risk of forced eviction due to the construction of a highway in Recreio dos Bandeirantes, Rio de Janeiro. After months of threats, on 22 October at 9:00am council workers accompanied by heavily armed civil and military police, began bulldozing a commercial district that has existed for over twenty years, destroying five shops. The execution of Mohammad Reza Haddadi, a 21-year-old man, scheduled for 9 December, did not take place. No new execution date has been announced.
