The Laranjeira Ñanderu indigenous community, including over 80 children and 30 elderly people, is at risk of eviction from an area they claim as ancestral lands in Brazil. Seventy-one members of a Guatemalan community who had sought refuge in Tabasco state, Mexico, have been detained by Mexican authorities and taken to a migrant detention centre. Urgent action (good news): Exiled indigenous leader Segundo Alberto Pizango Chota released

Exiled Indigenous leader, Segundo Alberto Pizango Chota, was released from detention on 27 May. He had been detained on 26 May at Lima airport, Peru, immediately after he returned from exile in Nicaragua.

Alberto Pizango, leader of AIDESEP (Asociación Interétnica de Desarrollo de la Selva Peruana) had been in exile in Nicaragua since mid-June 2009. He landed at Lima airport on a flight from Nicaragua on 26 May. Upon his arrival he was immediately detained by police, but was released yesterday (27 May). [ Lire la suite » ]

Six men in Cauca department, western Colombia, including Afro-descendant and Indigenous community leaders, all received the same threatening SMS (text) message simultaneously on 4 December.
