Dear Minister
Shi Tao , a journalist born in 1968, is serving a ten-years prison sentence in Deshan Prison and a two years’ subsequent deprivation of political rights, for sending an e-mail.
The Chinese authorities accused him of “ Illegally providing state secrets overseas” (Article 111 of the Criminal law).
Imprisoned for peacefully exercising his right to freedom of expression, a right entrenched in international law and the Chinese Constitution. Amnesty international considers Shi Tao as a prisoner of conscience.
As a member of Amnesty international, I have the honour to appeal you on behalf of Mr. Shi Tao. May I, urgently and respectfully, request you to intervene personally in his case to secure his immediate release from detention.
I am deeply concerned that his detention, trial and sentencing for reasons of “Sate Secrets” could have a political motive linked to his attempts at defending the right to freedom of expression.
I urge the Chinese authorities to take action so that Shi Tao and other journalists are allowed to practise their peaceful activities in favour of human rights without fear of being arbitrarily arrested or intimidated, as stated in the Declaration for the Protection of Human Rights Defenders.
Your sincerely and respectfully.
