Dear Eric E. Schmidt,

Google.cn is contributing to the system of Internet censorship in China, through filtering words on search engines and restricting access to information.

I acknowledge Google co-founder Sergey Brin’s support of a “principled approach”. However, Google is not doing enough to effectively protect freedom of expression in the context of its Internet operations in China.

I call on Google to :

- Use the opportunity provided by the Beijing Olympics to publicly call on the Chinese Government to release – before the Games - Yang Tongyan, Huang Jinqiu, Shi Tao and all others detained for their peaceful and legitimate use of the Internet.

- Publicly affirm Google’s support for the Universal Declaration of Human Rights and the company’s commitment to respect and protect freedom of expression and privacy rights.

- Publicly make clear that abiding by these principles means Google will (a) ensure that the company takes all possible legitimate action to avoid complying with government requests that may have a negative impact on human rights and (b) challenge government policies and practices that violate human rights in the context of the Internet.

- Commit to independent monitoring and evaluation of the company’s compliance with its human rights principles. Independent monitoring is vital to ensure robust and credible systems are in place and operating effectively.

I trust that Google is sincere in its motto, “don’t do evil”, and that this includes being proactive in protecting freedom of expression in the context of its Internet operations in China.
